 2023 Preview

Escambia Academy completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. With their 1-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class AA region two, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Escambia Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Chambers Academy by a score of 56-12.

Escambia Academy took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Cougars lost as many games as in any season since 2010. The Cougars hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just four games which followed a 11-2 record in 2021.

Since 2010, Escambia Academy has gone a combined 110-49. Their 69.2% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AA over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Escambia Academy has managed to compile a record of 160-126. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class AA and 13th in the AISA.

The Cougars will be under the direction of new head football coach Gex Billups as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Billups has had the interim tag taken off his head coaching job this fall.

The Cougars open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Valiant Cross Academy on Friday, August 25 at Alabama State. Last year the Valiant Cross Academy Warriors finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fifth place in Class AAA region one. The Warriors lost in the semi-finals round of the Class AAA playoffs to Lee-Scott Academy by a score of 41-0.

Escambia Academy and Valiant Cross Academy have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 2-0-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2022 with Escambia Academy winning by a score of 25-18.

Escambia Academy lost AISA All-State  defensive lineman Nick Cain to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate athlete Jacob Lee.
